Located near Chidlow in the Perth Hills, Lake Leschenaultia has an old world charm that offers the perfect city escape.
Lake Leschenaultia is a perfect outing for a picnic with plenty of shaded areas, BBQ facilities, a swimming beach with pontoon, canoe hire and walking and cycle trails. Children are particularly well catered for, making this an ideal family destination.
Lake Leschenaultia is great any time of the year, but on a hot day, it’s a refreshing respite and a shady alternative to the beach.
Formerly known as Chidlows Well, the Lake was built in 1897 as a dam by the Western Australian Government Railway to provide water to steam trains. Since 1947 it’s become a premier recreational site.
Rent a canoe and explore the lake from the water – or bring your own rubber dinghy or stand up paddleboard.
Canoe Hire at Lake Leschenaultia is available from 1 September to 1 July and costs $13 for half an hour or $20 for a full hour.
There’s a three-kilometre walk trail around the lake to explore the surrounding bushland. Keep an eye out for the numerous species of native birds, kangaroos, possums and echidnas that live in the area.
Or else, bring your bike and make use of the 10-kilometre long offroad cycle trail.
Want to stay longer? The Lake Leschenaultia camp site has 22 powered camping sites. Campsites are approximately 6×6 metre and suitable for tents and camper trailers. There’s also a non-powered site suitable for groups of up to 40 people.
New camping rates go into effect on 1st July 2018. The site fee is $39 per night for two people and $11 per additional person (18+) and $6.50 per child.
For crowds, weddings, family get-togethers and any other sociable even, shelters and lawns can be hired for exclusive use.

It is a great little spot!
I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to find it.
Wish I knew of this lake when I was last in Perth on a 40 degree day!
I learnt to swim here back in the 1970s. We had many a family outing to “the lake”. Barbecues and picnics and I still remember being treated to a Twin Pole at the cafeteria. The muddy smell of the lake evokes many memories for me.
Sounds like a lovely childhood memory. There’s a real old fashioned appeal to the lake and I hope that kids continue to grow up with the same memories as you minus the Twin Poles (whatever happened to those?)
Hi Nina,
Wow, Lake Leshenaultia looks like a place we have to visit in a couple of months, when we’re back to Perth. A lake with a beach… love it! There so many beautiful places around Perth. Thanks for sharing.
Liebe Grüsse aus Adelaide,
Reni 🙂
