What you need to know about skydiving on Rottnest Island

Get ready to take the plunge on West Australia’s favourite holiday island

Rottnest Island is Perth’s perfect little island getaway. And what could make a West Australian holiday more exciting than a Rottnest Island skydive?

Thanks to Skydive Geronimo, it is now possible to go skydiving on Rottnest Island. And as Western Australia’s only island skydive, the experience is a little bit special.

Tandem skydiving is one of Australia’s top adventure activities for people who want to do something extraordinary – and an island-jump is pretty epic.

From 15,000 feet, Rottnest looks like a tiny jewel sitting pretty in the Indian Ocean. As beautiful as it is, it can be intimidating. But that’s what skydiving is all about.

If you’re thinking about skydiving on Rottnest Island, here’s everything you need to know.

Getting to Rottnest Island for your skydive

Probably the biggest thing to consider is getting to the island. Unless you purchase the skydive and ferry package, you will have to make your own arrangements to get to and from Rottnest. There are two ferry companies leaving from four departure locations: Barrack Street Jetty or Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth and B Shed or Rous Head Harbour in Fremantle.

You can also fly to the island or if you have your own boat, cruise over in style. The main thing to consider is arriving on time for your skydive booking. Remember to allow time to get to the airport, which is 800 metres from the ferry dock. On foot, allow 15 minutes to get there. If you’re on a bike, which is a popular and recommended way to see the island, it should take only five minutes to reach the airport. There’s also a free bus that leaves the main bus port every 30 minutes, so if the timing is right, this could work for you.

With so many travel options, a day trip is doable.

Arrive early, stay late

Bookings start at 8:15am and it’s a good idea to snag a morning timeslot. There are a couple of reasons for this. If you’re jumping during the summer months (skydiving on Rottnest is available year-round), there’s a sea breeze affectionately called the Fremantle Doctor that arrives each day around noon.

The doctor is a welcome relief to the WA heat. But sometimes when he’s a bit aggressive and jumping must go “on hold” or be cancelled for the day. Of course, weather, especially wind, is an important element to skydiving.

Skydive Geronimo has two beach landing areas on Rottnest: Bickley Bay and Salmon Bay. Choosing which beach to land on all depends on the wind direction. If friends and family want to watch your landing, the Geronimo crew will tell them which beach to go to. They will then have to make their own way there by bus or bike. After your jump, you’ll be transported back to the airport in Geronimo’s snazzy electric island commuter bus.

Your Rottnest skydive will take about two hours then you’ll have the rest of the day to explore and make the most of the day.

Celebrate and enjoy the island after your skydive

After your skydive, you’ll have the opportunity to celebrate life with a complimentary house wine, beer or soft drink at Hotel Rottnest. Not only that, but you’ll also receive a free Island Explorer hop-on-hop-off day pass that lets you check out the best spots.

You’ll definitely want to go for a swim or snorkel; snap some insta-photos and try to get a coveted quokka-selfie.

The cute little marsupials roam the island. They’re friendly and seemingly tame but remember, they are wild animals. You may even see one at the airport before your jump. See our favourite Rottnest Island attractions here.

Skydiving on Rottnest Island is a unique and exhilarating way to see the island. Only tandem skydive customers and Skydive Geronimo’s most experienced instructors get to do this jump.
