Faversham House in York is one of Western Australia’s most historic houses and makes for a luxurious weekend getaway. It provides the perfect base to explore York and the Avon Valley. Alternatively, if you don’t feel like going anywhere,  the impressive manor is also the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the historic property and gorgeous garden.

York Accommodation- Faversham House

Staying at Faversham House is like taking a trip back to the late 19th century. Exquisitely decked out in antiques, it’s the kind of place where you want to channel Lady Mary from Downtown Abby, talk in a posh accent and retreat to the sitting room after a game of croquet on the lawn.

The heritage listed grand manor was built by the pioneering Monger family in the 1840s. The Mongers were amongst the earliest settlers in the Avon Valley where they prospered with a string of business enterprises and farming ventures. You can find out more about the Monger family here.

Stepping back in the time in the cozy sitting room. You’ll almost wish it’s raining outside so that you can sit in here all day, browse through the extensive library and sip cups of tea.

Who doesn’t love a breakfast buffet? We enjoyed the homemade brekky in this exquisite dining room.

Faversham is set on 5 acres of gorgeous gardens, vineyards, fruit trees and manicured lawns. The garden area is made for tea parties and lawn games.

For anyone feeling active, there’s a half-court tennis court, as well as a trolley decked out with games. Alternatively, sit back on a chair in the garden, relax with a book and enjoy the views.

Staying at Faversham House

There are two accommodation options at Faversham. The luxury option is to stay at a room in the mansion which is the main building at Faversham.

These contain nine beautifully spacious rooms, with king size or queen size beds. The rooms are uniquely furnished with antiques and all have their own bathroom. They also have access to the veranda with pretty views of Mount Brown.

We went down the more humble options and stayed in the Courtyard Room (I’ll be back for the luxury option though). The courtyard rooms are in a separate building next to the mansion and were formerly the servant quarter during Faversham’s grand days.

Although rooms here are more Maid Anna than Lady Mary, the courtyard rooms are charming, very comfortable and you’ll miss out on none of the great hospitality offered by the hosts at Faversham. All the rooms in the courtyard have a shared bathroom.

Faversham House is a quick walk to York and the main attractions including the York Motor Museum. There’s also a good selection of restaurants available for dinner including the excellent York Palace Hotel.
